Simple but Unique: The Art of the Layered Ring

This workshop will explore how to design rings that share a unique layered appearance but employ the use of basic yet simple metalsmithing techniques. The emphasis of this class will be to create a piece of jewelry using cold connections with rivets. Piercing metal and hand sawing will also be a subject of focus. A small amount of soldering will also play a part in the construction process. Students will learn how to design and construct rings in different layers that flow and function together as a cohesive piece. Other topics explored will be how to fit and determine the desired size of a ring. Silver and titanium will be the core materials used, in the form of: sheet, tubing, wire and a variety of prefabricated components. For three days the workshop will flow with demonstrations, discussion and hands on experience.

Making Beautiful, Wearable, Sculptural Jewelry With Titanium and Niobium

This workshop is intended to familiarize one with the understanding in how to transform titanium and niobium into a piece of jewelry. This will involve creating an object on paper that incorporates; aesthetics, function and and how the piece will be constructed. These concepts will then be developed into metal objects using the techniques of sawing, stamping and shearing. We will create wearable art pieces based on discussion and hands on experience. A layering process will be introduced demonstrating multiple possibilities of assembly. A strong focus of the class also will be on coloring metal with heat and an electrical process of anodizing. The workshop is open for all skill levels. Participants are encouraged to come with an imaginative, experimental approach to jewelry making.

Pound, Hammer and Punch: The Art of Cold Connecting

This workshop will explore exciting alternate ways to attach and connect metal objects together. The emphasis of this class will be to create a piece of jewelry without heat, using only cold connections. Students will learn how to design and construct jewelry in different layers that flow and function together as a cohesive piece. The finished designs can be for any use: a necklace, a pair of earrings, a bracelet, or a clever metal made item of choice. The exploration of cold joining by ways of crimping and bending will also be covered. Project materials include: sheet metal, tubing, wire, chain, and a variety of prefabricated components. Other topics explored will be how to cut metal by hand sawing, shearing, and punching. Participants are encouraged to come with an imaginative, experimental approach to jewelry making.

A Link or Two

This workshop will explore exciting and alternate ways to attach and connect small objects together. The emphasis of the class is to create a chain of metal elements that flow and function together that transitions into a linkage system. The finished designs can be for any use: a necklace, a chain for a pendant, a bracelet, or a clever jewelry object of choice. Participants will learn how to cut metal components by punching, hand sawing metal. An exploration of cold connecting will be covered. Students will be introduced to a variety of clasping devices that will add purpose and personality to a finished jewelry piece. Project materials include: sheet metal, tubing, wire, chain, and a variety of prefabricated components. Participants are encouraged to come with an imaginative, experimental approach to jewelry making.
